DNR-CC vs. DNR-CCA

DNR = Do Not Resuscitate

DNR orders can only be written by a physician or a Licensed Independent Practitioner.

DNR-CC = Do Not Resuscitate – Comfort Care

DNR-CCA = Do Not Resuscitate – Comfort Care Arrest

In the state of Ohio, there are two types of DNR orders. (Ohio DNR Protocol)

DNR-CC

If a patient has a DNR-CC order and goes into cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest, then CPR is not performed.

Once the DNR-CC order is written, then only Comfort Care actions can be performed before, during, or after the moment the patient’s heart or breathing stops.

DNR-CCA

If a patient has a DNR-CCA order, then before the patient’s heart or breathing stops, life-saving treatments are permitted.

After the patient’s heart or breathing stops, then only comfort care can be provided.
